Most see what they think they came to see and walk away. Maybe it is a luxury I had no idea I had been given, but I’ve discovered there is more to see. The sunset is only the beginning so don’t leave too soon.
Yes, Sure, We Better Go
It’s usually a casual decision. One of us will ask the other… typically when there is little time to spare before the sun sets. “Do you want to ride to the end of the road?” The answer is always yes, sure, or we better. It feels like the correct answer. This place has become a familiar one. There are the “locals” which we now call by their first names. Dogs are part of the mix, and we know which one belongs to which local. We go because it is familiar, and we go because this place is real in so many ways.
Don't Leave Too Soon
After seeing countless sunsets, I’ve noticed how people so quickly disappear. The sun sinks behind the horizon and the people duck into their cars and drive away. Recently, I long to linger. I hang in the shadow to welcome more of what the sunset offers. John is so patient and does not become annoyed. I can’t help myself. I turn to him and say, wait… don’t leave too soon. The best is yet to come.
Artistry
I watch the sky continue to swing into its full expression. The colors float in and out. They change quickly as the clouds grab the sunlight that we believe has gone away. The minutes after the sun sets have become my favorite moments. The world has stilled and all that is left is artistry. We must be willing to wait on the best part. There is a gift at the end of every day; don’t leave too soon.
Hard To Stop Watching
Once we finally decide it is time to move along, I turn sideways in the truck seat. I cannot stop watching the change. I’m so afraid it is about to be the best moment and I will miss it. So, I take just one more picture and annoy the others with my commentary. I will be back as soon as time allows. It might even be tomorrow night. Some things in life are okay to obsess over especially when it is the same and different each time.
Next Time, Don't Leave Too Soon
Sunsets never grow old and never cease to amaze me. They hold my attention. I believe I could write something new every night. Creation amazes me. It is ever-changing and involves precision and detail. The day you think you have seen something a million times over, that is when you need to pay attention. We discover something new about the one thing we think we know so well. Don’t leave too soon… you won’t want to miss what’s next.
