My favorite season is here. I have waited for this with anticipation over the mild winter. We escaped without too many days below freezing and faced no wintery rainfall. Nature shares her confidence as beauty rises above the green grass.
Spring
My worrisome eye begins to see the rebellious shoots on top of shrubs, the one-foot-tall green grass, and nature racing ahead of me. I cannot wait to join them outside. The warm sun on my face eagerly pulls me out. I simply cannot choose which emotion to lean into. How can relief, excitement, and anxiety breathe in synchronicity? I am not sure, but it’s real. Spring is here. She always has a story to tell. She is my favorite teacher.
Above The Green Grass
We arrived at our Daybook Cottage early in the afternoon. The Florida sun shines warm and long in early spring. Our bags land on the floor without a second thought. My primary decision is whether to walk out back and through the tall fence or across the sun porch to the front lawn. Sprinkles of white and yellow shine above the tall shoots of green grass, catch my eye, and this becomes an easy decision. I can focus on the need for mowing, but I just won’t. Wildflowers (yes, many consider them weeds) are stretching hard to have their heads above the unwavering green grass. They are winning the race, so I walk down the stone path to get a closer look.
No Fear
These spring treasures bloom without fear of a cold snap, drought, or even a lawn mower moving in. They instinctively know that fear is an enemy. If they miss this chance, their beauty will never be known. They’d remain small and unproductive. Eventually forgotten.
Fighting To Rise
Fear is always tapping me on the shoulder. Unfortunately, I am not as determined as the spring wildflowers. Inspiration comes to me quickly and often, but fear is such a monster. My journals are full of ideas that I’ve written quickly. Sometimes they’re illegible because of my fervor to remember my thoughts. Then fear creeps in and convinces me there is nothing there. And here I am again; several emotions breathing in the same moment both fighting to rise above the green grass.
Beauty Inside
I slide off my shoes and head inside to grab my pocket knife. If you have a garden, you understand. I want to bring the beauty of spring inside before the inevitable cleanup begins. I clip just enough to create a tiny bouquet. The flowers are so delicate. They lend themselves to a small bundle. The piece of twine that has wicked its way to the bottom of my bag is perfect for tying them together. It is a sweet bundle of spring. It rests on the mantle while we visit the cottage this weekend.
They Showed Up
These flowers had no fear. They did not fuss or worry. They required no tilling, spurring, or praise. They showed up without intimidation. Their beauty is enjoyed by the people who cross their path at the precise time. They are matchless. No other flower, weed, or plant can offer the world what they can give.
Reach Above
Isn’t it time we let go of fear? How much beauty are we missing by letting fear win the battle? Fear is our common denominator. We all experience it. It is one thing we all have in common, and it looks similar within all of us. Like the wildflowers, we have something unique deep inside of us. Our gifts, talents, thoughts, and inspirations are exclusive to us. How beautiful we will be when we let our true selves reach above the shoots of tall green grass and do what we are created to do.
Above The Green Grass
This weekend the wildflowers were teachers. They were doing what God created them to do, and He placed me in the exact place to enjoy their beauty and learn the lessons of spring. If we pay attention, we see that everything around us tells a story and often prods us along to push above the green grass to be the beautiful one we were created to be.
